A Futuristic Industrial/Product Design project to design a useful Accessory for Luxury Residential Spaces

ParaWave: Storm is a parametric product design exploration set within the luxury residential smart home context. The project investigates how a functional audio device can transcend its utility, to become a considered décor object, an ambient light source, and a structural focal point within a living space. All design decisions are rooted in a study of the existing smart speaker market, and it aims to address the design-conscious luxury consumer.
Today’s luxury home is no longer just a space. It is a curated experience. The decor within it is as deliberate as the architecture of the space. Yet most smart speakers remain purely functional, designed for performance over presence. For a speaker to belong in a luxury residential space, it needs to offer:
ParaWave: Storm aims to offer just that and fit into a luxury home, like it always belonged there.
Stay tuned to explore the journey of designing ParaWave: Storm, A Speaker Built to Own the Room.
This project was built with the intention of expanding the series to include other products in the future. However, this project only focuses on one product, the speaker: ParaWave: Storm.
a)Golden Oak-stained Pinewood: Warm, textured, and natural, it brings richness to the parametric form, its grain becoming a visual feature in itself.
b)Black Stainless Steel: The dark woven mesh creates depth and shadow beneath the wood, grounding the form with quiet intensity.
c)Stainless Steel: Used for controls and branding, the silver steel brings crisp contrast — a clean, precise edge against the warmth of wood and the darkness of the mesh.
d)Inspiration from competitors’ products.

A parametric and multifunctional speaker, blending music, ambient lighting, and décor. The form makes the speaker a central focal point of any space it is kept in.
ParaWave is a series of home appliances which are multi-functional and share the same elegant design language.
This project focuses on a wireless speaker which also functions as an ambient light and a luxury décor object, with customisable lighting modes.
This project also has scope to integrate an app that helps control the different lighting modes and speaker settings.
In future explorations, the series will expand to include other ambient home décor tech products like aesthetic speakers, ambient lighting fans, and other decorative smart home accessories.
ParaWave: Storm is a form exploration — a study in designing an object that earns its place in a room. The intent was to create a presence, a speaker that functions as a structural focal point, as much a piece of décor as it is a device.

A few well-known brands were identified and their strengths and weaknesses were studied.

Unlike existing smart speakers — which prioritise ecosystem integration or audio performance at the expense of form — ParaWave: Storm is designed to be ecosystem-agnostic and platform-independent, functioning seamlessly across any digital environment. It occupies a space none of the current market leaders address: a speaker that is also a considered luxury object, designed to belong in a room as much as any piece of furniture.

Ideation involved exploring different forms for the speaker. This is purely a form exploration exercise, and the final design was chosen based on aesthetics and functionality.

Form 1 was set aside for its visual similarity to existing product iconography.
Form 2, while structurally efficient, lacked the formal tension the design called for.
Form 3* was selected for its dynamic silhouette, functional form and balanced light placement.
Form 4, while aesthetically satisfactory, didn’t seem functional.
“ParaWave: Storm” is part of the ParaWave series—a collection of smart, decor-focused audio and lighting products. Future designs will expand this range with additional speakers or decorative lighting accessories, all featuring a cohesive design aesthetic. The other products in the series are still in development and are currently in the early stages.

Its features include:
The speaker is ~10 cm at its highest point, with a width of ~15-18 cm, and a depth of ~4-5 cm.
